Duff was loved by so many. How could you not? He didn’t know his size; he just wanted to love on you like it was nobody’s business. Crawl on your lap? No problem. Half crawl on your lap? Even better. He was our ambassador on the trails, always allowed to hike loose, greeting all two and four-legged friends with a happy and exuberant hello. He had the biggest heart and only wanted to be with his people, mostly me, following me everywhere in the house including the bathroom.
There was a theme when I shared our sad news with our closest friends and family: what a lug, what a love. He loved so hard and he loved so much. Some truly heartfelt sentiments shared: “He’ll go down as one of my favorite dogs. He was an amazing soul and an amazing animal and I’m so glad I got to spend so many years with him.” “You were so very very loved by your big lug.”
He was the favorite of the late (and wonderful) Diane Pilbin, Chucklebrook Labradors, who owned Duff's sire, Bo. She always said he reminded her so much of him, and I saw that in Duff everyday. I cannot thank Diane and Lisa Weiss of Lobuff Labradors enough for the opportunity to use Bo for one of his last litters.
Duff started his show career with a bang, winning both his Regular and Sweeps 4-6M Puppy classes at the Monday Potomac Specialty Match. He went on to have a successful journey to his championship finishing with all Specialty majors under breeder-judges. We are truly thankful for their recognition. I shared this journey with professional handler Kathy Mines and I so appreciate her showing Duff for me and earning his third Specialty Winners Dog.
He was shown selectively after he finished and earned points toward his Grand Championship but sustained a C6C7 neck injury during one of our regular hikes, retiring him from the show ring and as a stud dog. Duff was our constant companion, puppy mentor, and reminder that life is what you make it. He was resilient, forgiving, loving beyond measure, and a bull in a china shop. He made friends wherever he went and we were so blessed to have him in our lives. We will miss you always, Duff!
