About Us

Nycoma Way Labradors is located in the Upper Valley, a quaint and beautiful region of rolling mountains that stretches along the Connecticut River between New Hampshire and Vermont. My start in Labradors began in 1992, although I've been showing dogs for over 47 years (see Our History page).

I chose Labradors for their devotion, versatility, trainability, "no fuss, no muss" approach to life and personal grooming, natural hunting ability, and calm disposition.

At Nycoma Way we are committed to raising sound Labradors that are multi-purpose. We firmly believe that Labradors are first and foremost a sporting breed with multi-talents that need to be nurtured and encouraged. Our dogs are evaluated against the breed standard through competition in the breed/conformation ring; prove their trainability, desire and willingness to please in the obedience ring; and honor their true purpose through performance in hunt tests. Our dogs have earned multiple titles over the years and we are very proud of their accomplishments.

We breed infrequently and only when we plan to keep something for ourselves to improve our lines. We strive to produce Labradors that most importantly exemplify the true Labrador temperament: that of true and undying devotion, gentle and calm companionship, a willingness to please, and desire to hunt and retrieve without the use of a heavy hand. Soundness and health are paramount, as well as proper type.

All of our dogs live with us in our home with their own special dog room. They also share the rest of our home because with Labradors, there is no privacy! Puppies are raised in our home until they leave at 9 weeks. Those puppies that stay with us join the rest of the brood, learning house manners and "dog talk". All puppies go to their new homes on AKC Limited Registration and spay/neuter contracts. Only under special circumstances will we place a puppy on a co-ownership and full registration.

Commentary on the proliferation of cross-breeding and marketing scams.

We are preservation breeders dedicated to maintaining the integrity of this breed that we love so much. We unequivocally oppose cross-breeding of Labradors to produce doodles and "silvers" or other  "boutique" colors such as "white", "champagne", "charcoal" and other made up colors that are purely marketing schemes.

Proper type means conforming to the Labrador Retriever Club, Inc. Parent Club Standard for the Labrador Retriever. That includes preservation of the only three recognized and allowed colors of black, yellow, and chocolate. As quoted from the Standard: "Blacks are all black. Yellows may range in color from fox-red to light cream, with variations in shading on the ears, back, and underparts of the dog. Chocolate can vary in shade from light to dark chocolate. Chocolate with brindle or tan markings is a disqualification." Labradors may have a small white spot on the chest."

People marketing yellow Labradors as "white" or "champagne" or black Labradors as "charcoal" are completely uninformed, choose to blatantly disregard the Official Standard, or are purposefully trying to scam individuals and families into thinking that "white", "champagne", and "charcoal" are unique and rare and are thus worth more money - hence a higher price tag. That is false. There is no such thing as a "white" or "champagne" Labrador. They are simply yellow Labradors. There is no such thing as a "charcoal" Labrador. They are simply black Labradors.

While I could provide long commentary on "silver" Labradors, our parent club, the Labrador Retriever Club, Inc., already provides clear perspective on "silvers" as well as the unfortunate misuse of Labradors to create more designer dogs, all with a sole purpose of making a buck. We encourage you to do your homework when looking for a reputable breeder, as well as learn about the marketing ploys people are using to make a dollar. As a passionate and dedicated preservation breeder, we truly hope the public will take the time to educate themselves in order to make informed decisions. We are here to answer any questions you may have.

Why Nycoma Way?

Some people wonder where my kennel name comes from. It comes from Cape Cod, a very special place to me.
My grandfather and great-grandfather built the first cottage on a sand road they named "Nycoma Way". Now many cottages long, our extended family has vacationed there for over 80 years. My Nan lived there for most of her adult life.  She meant the world to me and supported my love for dogs since I was a child - Labradors in particular.  I believe part of my love for Labradors came from my early experiences with one of her special Labrador mixes--Abraham, or "Hammie" as we affectionately called him. This home remains in our family and I treasure our time here with our beloved Labradors.
